Pittsburgh-based UPMC is going to cut about 1% of its 100,000 employees across its footprint.

A Jamestown hospital could see job cuts as its parent company lays off about 1,000 employees.

Pittsburgh-based UPMC, the largest nongovernmental employer in Pennsylvania, announced today it would cut about 1% of its 100,000 employees. Those layoffs will come throughout its health care system as well as in its health insurance division and other units.

They will also come from UPMC Chautauqua, the 287-bed hospital formerly known as WCA Hospital, which became part of UPMC in 2016.

The system would not say exactly how the Jamestown hospital would be affected but, in a prepared statement, said the reductions would occur throughout the health system, primarily among non-clinical, non member-facing administrative staff through attrition, closing of open positions and elimination of redundancies.

“This realignment will not alter UPMC’s investments in our communities, facilities, commitment to clinical care and research, strategic growth, or to offering those throughout our workforce industry-leading benefits,” said Paul Wood, vice president and chief communications officer.

The Jamestown hospital had revenue of $160 million with a surplus of $6.4 million in 2022, the most recent year for which data was available. The company employed about 1,000 people in 2022.

According to the Pittsburgh Business Times, a sister publication of Bufalo Business First, this is the first time UPMC has had to make systemwide reductions in its workforce since the financial crisis of 2008-09, when it also laid off about 500 people, or 1% of its then much smaller workforce.
